The entire point of using social media is so that your target audience finds you. Simply creating a profile isn’t enough to help your audience locate you. Here are six tips that you can use to make it more likely to be discovered.


  1. Create a customized URL:


On your profile page, you have an opportunity to create a customized URL with keywords to attract search engines. Here are some suggestions on where to place the URL:


  • Use it in your email signature line
  • Use it on your website(s)
  • Use it on your Tweets
  • Use it on your Facebook posts
  • Use it on your Google+ posts
  • Use it on your YouTube posts



  1. Customize your Website Links:


You can list three website links on your profile page. Customize these links with keywords to attract people to your profile.


  1. Create Keyword Rich Headlines:


Under your name, beside your picture on LinkedIn, is a place for you to create a headline. Use keywords that describe what you do, Separate the keywords and keyword phrases with the pipe “|” in order to differentiate your skills.


  1. Use Keywords in your Summary:


Under your photograph, name and headline is an area that is called the Summary. You have three seconds to attract your reader’s attention. Use keywords in your introduction sentence to make your profile stand out from the crowd.


  1. Use Keywords in your Experience:


In the area where you input your work experience, it’s important to use keywords there too. Keywords will describe the expertise that you have and help people find you on LinkedIn.


  1. Turn off Privacy Features:


This is key if you want to be found on LinkedIn, or any social media for that matter. Check your privacy settings to ensure that all privacy features are turned off so that anyone can locate you. I am amazed at the number of people complaining about not generating leads and failing to check the privacy option.

LinkedIn can increase you market reach exponentially. Never before in history have business owners had so much information at their fingertips, with such close proximity and access to their markets. LinkedIn is an effective marketing channel that targets businesses and professionals.


Here are 4 tactics you can use to increase your market reach:


  1.  Search for Prospects:


The power of LinkedIn search of its database is incredible. You will find extensive information on your prospects. Let’s look at some key data points to help you in your search. There are three levels of connections as they relate to you:


  • First degree connections are direct contacts
  • Second degree connections require a connection request
  • Third degree connections require an introduction from your shared connection


The type of information LinkedIn provides is also amazing:


  • You can determine the background of the connection
  • You can see the connections you have in common with your prospect
  • You also can find information on their products and services
  • You can find common interests, schools, charity, and much more to help you establish common ground with your prospect




  1. Conduct a monthly search
  2. Compile a list of your results
  3. Choose the top three decision makers
  4. Decide how to reach them
  5. Try to connect with them by the end of the month
  6. When you make the connection request, introduce yourself by sharing a common interest


Here is an example:


If the prospect’s charity interest is feeding the homeless and you share that same passion, let them know in your introduction.


Hi Joe! I see we work every Saturday to feed the homeless people by serving food in a shelter. I am so excited. My wife and I just helped a homeless mother and her two small children not only eat a hot meal, but we placed them in a woman’s shelter. How about you? Let’s connect and get to know each other.”


Frankly, it would be difficult not to connect with a person sharing your social cause.


  1.  Join Targeted Groups:


Groups are an excellent way to market your business, products and / or services to interested parties. The trick is not to become a spammer by only using the group to promote your stuff. Instead, become a resource to the group within your expertise. Over time, people will come to know, like and trust you.



  • Join three group
  • Find 2 that you believe your target market uses
  • Find one your colleagues use
  • Create a unique introduction for each group
  • Participate daily.


  1.  Create Your Own Group:


If your goal is to make sales, then create a group for your target audience with you as the leading expert. Share information with the group and offer to help members with problems. People will remember you as the expert.



  • Use existing material you created (like your blog) and use it for a group
  • Invite the people to join
  • Ask them to invite others
  • Consider marketing the group to get more members
  • Interact regularly with your group.


  1. Purchase Direct Ads:


The best use of direct ads is with your company page.

  • You can budget expenses via “Impressions” or “Clicks”
  • You can create a variety of ads
  • Target your audience with relevant keywords in the text of the ad
  • With the right “Call to Action,” these ads will generate leads

4 Mistakes to Avoid When Using LinkedIn

Do you want to ensure failure on LinkedIn? Here are four essential steps to ensure your LinkedIn profile will not attract attention from anybody at anytime.These steps are the best way I know to ensure failure and destroy your presence in cyberspace.

LinkedIn is a powerful networking community of professionals. It’s much easier to screw up on LinkedIn than on Facebook or Twitter. Sharing your child’s potty habits seems to be the norm on Facebook. LinkedIn though, is not like that. It’s a place to share professional updates and information about your industry. It is not a place to debate politics, or discuss your hangover.

Here are four mistakes to avoid when using LinkedIn:

  1. Please Do Not Use a Fake Name

LinkedIn is a repository for your professional life. The worst thing you can do is to be anonymous. I know there is a lot of concern about people getting private information about you off the Internet, but this is not the place to worry about that.

On LinkedIn, being found is the name of the game. If you do not use your real name, the one you use at work and in business, you will not be found. If people find out later that your real name is different, you’ll lose trust.

In addition, you will want to ask for endorsements and recommendations from former colleagues and you can’t do that if they don’t know who you are. You must be authentic on the LinkedIn network in order to make it fruitful. If you cannot do that, and be yourself, you may as well not join.


  1. Avoid Using a Terrible Picture or Posting No Picture

Your photo on LinkedIn is a graphic representation of your most professional self. It’s okay if you work at home in your PJ’s, but on LinkedIn, its important to try to capture a good close up image of your face (what you have on won’t matter).

People want and need to see your eyes, nose and mouth. It’s how colleagues will recognize you, and how new people will react to you. First impressions count!

Avoid images common on Facebook. This is not a dating site, a beachwear showcase, or displaying your team’s sportswear. Facebook demands creativity to attract attention and the background is almost as important as the person in the picture.

On LinkedIn, it is your face that matters and the background is not noticeable. You can use your camera on the computer or smart phone to take a close up picture and then post it to your profile.


  1. Do Not Create a Half-Hearted Profile

Some people join LinkedIn and are so overwhelmed by the profile that they skip parts or just never finish it. The profile is key to:

  • Your ability to connect with others
  • Obtain recommendations for work that you’ve done
  • Provide the social proof that shows you as the hardworking professional that you are.


Fill out all aspects of the profile that you can and then take note of the parts you’ve not completed. Find ways to fill out the profile completely. Why? Because your profile’s goal is to have people know, like and trust you. Without trust, they will not contact you.

Ok, you created your profile. You jumped in by connecting with current and former colleagues. Now you must participate in the discussion.

You can do this by offering information to discussions on LinkedIn groups. You can also read articles posted by your connections with your comments. LinkedIn is social media such as Facebook, so you can “like” and “share” updates from others. This is a great way to build trust and promote reciprocity.
