Eight Crucial Steps to Talk to Your Family About Your Home-Based Business

How to Talk to Your Family about Working from Home

“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” –Epictetus

When you first realize the possibilities about working from home, it’s normal to get super excited and believe everyone else will be too. But often times the family isn’t as happy as you are, or as trusting. As a retiree, you likely have a spouse, grown children, and grandchildren. Everyone will want to get into the act, as Jimmy Durante would say.

What you should do to Help Your Family Understand Your Dream

Your family may think it’s just a pipe dream, or worse, a scam. They haven’t done the research you have, so they do not realize the true possibilities and potential surrounding the idea of working from home. It is a challenge to communicate your discovery to them.

  1. Provide Your Research to Them

Many times your family just cares about you so much that they simply want to protect you. But, if you show them the research that you’ve done, they may quickly realize that you’ve done your homework, and that you’re not going to fall for a fraudulent scheme.

  1. Give Examples of Others Doing It Successfully

More than likely, at this point you have a circle of influence that includes work-at-home success stories. Let your partner and family in on the fact by talking about how so-and-so is making x dollars and all from working from home. Explain what they do, and put the bug in their ear of the possibilities and potential.

  1. Write Out a Business Plan

Banks want business plans to ensure that you’ve looked at all aspects of the business you plan to run. They want to see the numbers, and how you plan to make more money in the short term and the long term. Your family will feel better seeing these numbers, too. Even if you don’t plan to get a loan for your business, showing them everything down on paper will impress them.

  1. Transition Slowly, Timing Is Everything

Don’t expect everyone to be on board from day one. The idea takes time to sink in for some people. They are motivated by concern for you. Spouses fear what they don’t understand and not everyone is entrepreneurial or likes taking what they see as risks.

Even though telecommuting has been around a while, it’s still rare enough that people are shocked to find out that their home shopping orders, or pizza orders are being taken by someone in their home office.

Use Your C

  1. Work after Hours to Show Them the Money

If you’re not getting any place with discussion, you might want to start working after hours to show them the money. Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character in the movie, Jerry Maguire, had it right. People think differently about many things when they see the cash. If you have a spouse or family like that, you can work around their schedules doing something to earn money and then show them by paying for something fun, like a family vacation.

  1. Grandchildren Need to Understand Your “Office Hours”

You’re going to have to talk to your grandchildren a lot about work time. Many homes with grandparents are taking care of their grandchildren during the day. This is especially true in the summer months during school vacation.

You might even have to have a talk to your spouse about the importance of quiet time. It’s a myth that you can work in chaos and constant interruption. You need a place you can work, and that people realize to leave you alone when you’re doing it. You can use a sign on the door, timers, and other incentives to get everyone on board.

  1. Make Your Family into Partners

As they start to get on board with the idea of your working from home, reward them by making them part of your business. You can hire family members and spouses on a contracting basis and pay them, and deduct if from your business taxes. Plus, they will start making money too and that will make them really get on board.

Children can file, spouses can sometimes do what you’re doing or offer technical help. They can ship products and help you with “Shoe Leather” marketing.

  1. Keep the Lines of Communication Open

The most important aspect of talking to your family about working from home is to keep the lines of communication open at all times. You want to be honest with what is working and what is not working, and you’ll be surprised at how much your family is on your side with the goal of your working from home.

  1. Keep the Faith

It takes time to develop a business. Family can sometimes be a hard sell, but it’s not because they don’t love you. It’s because they do love you. Also, sometimes it’s just because they just don’t understand what working at home means. Lead by example and show them what you are doing and why it is important to you. You will find they will eventually share your faith in yourself to succeed.

Make Money by Starting a Targeted News Blog

“The value of an idea lies in the using of it.”

Thomas Edison, Electric Light Bulb Inventor

The most successful news sites or blog sites are highly targeted with a narrow focus for a specific type of person. Specific sites are more likely to attract search engine traffic due to the specific topics covered. These sites are more likely to get passed along within a community of like-minded people. With a clearly defined audience coveted by advertisers, the blog can attract higher-paying advertisers than more generic websites.

Steps to Set Up a News Blog

Here’s how to start a targeted news blog site.

  1. Select a Specific Topic or Area of Interest

The more specific you can get, the better. Instead of “online business” which is a hugely crowded market, a much more specific website would be a blog about “raising venture capital for an online business.”

You can also target specific locations. For example, “San Francisco Restaurant Blog” has a very good chance of making its way around the SF foodie network. It would also be popular with people who travel and want to know what is available in the location.

  1. Stay on Top of Current Events in Your Field

It’s crucial if you’re blogging about a specific interest that you stay on top of the industry. There are a few ways to do this.

  • Subscribe to RSS feeds from various blogs in your industry. Whenever a piece of news hits one of these blogs, you should be the first to know.

  • Use a news and website aggregator like “Your Version” to stay on top of non-blog websites.

  • Set Up a Google Alert for your topic. This is similar to a news clipping service that leads you to the latest article published on the web.

  1. Write with Personality and Insight

Let your personality out and let your thoughts be known. In many markets, what’s being talked about has been beaten to death so many times that people choose blogs based more on the personality than the news they carry.

Of course, you still have to provide Grade A content. This often comes in the form of your own personal insights rather than just facts. One great example is the “Rich Jerk” website. The Rich Jerk isn’t teaching anything that the Internet marketing community doesn’t know. In fact, it’s very basic information. But his personality is so interesting and so insulting that people can’t help but read the entire website – and by that time feel like they have to buy.

  1. Apply Proven Marketing Techniques

Make your website search engine friendly. Start building an email list. Find other people in your industry that would be willing to work with you and share joint information that both audiences would appreciate

Make Money with Your Online News Blog

There are several ways to generate revenues to your site.

  • Add Google AdSense: This is a good beginning by letting Google, Bing or other services place an ad on your blog. When people click onto the ad, you get paid. Rates vary according to the keyword.

  • Sell ad placement on a prominent site in a specific industry: For example, if you own a health website, you might be getting $5 for every click through rate (CPM) from Google. But an advertiser who sees your site as good branding to be associated with might be willing to pay as much as $15 CPM – sometimes more.

  • Sell Banner Ads “Above the Fold:” This term harks back to newspapers where the most visible ad appeared above where the newspaper is folded. For blogs, the area is immediately after the heading. These advertisers are willing to pay a monthly rate for a specified period of time.

Starting a targeted news or blog site is a great way to build a solid reputation in an industry. You can make more money than a broader website, with less work to boot.

Setting Up a Blog Using WordPress

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”                                                                                                                –Helen Keller (deaf/blind author)

Setting up a blog using WordPress doesn’t have to be challenging even if you don’t know the first thing about blogging. With just a few simple steps to follow you’ll be blogging away in no time.

Why Use WordPress?

It’s free. More than 25% of all websites and blogs on the Internet use this program. You don’t need to know a thing about coding. Did I mention it’s free?

How to Find WordPress?

Go to “cPanel” on your host server’s website. The fastest way to install WordPress software is to use Fantastico. Fantastico is software included with most hosting companies that allows you to install applications like WordPress on your site easily. If you’re not sure if your hosting company supports Fantastico (most do), then contact their customer support. They may have a similar program available to do the installation.

  1. Click on the “Fantastico Icon”

If you see a Fantastico icon when you log into your hosting account, click on it. You’ll be taken to a page with many options. Look on the left side and you’ll see WordPress. Click the link and you’ll be brought to the “install page.” On this page, you will find options to click.

Arrgg! More Options!

Don’t sweat it. These are easy options to fill out.

  • Choose the correct domain name that you want to install WordPress.
  • Don’t worry about installing it in a directory.

Leave that icon blank and it’ll post the blog on the home page of your site. If you prefer, put the word blog there and it will install on yourdomain.com/blog instead.

  • Devise a Unique Administrator Name for Your Site:

Come up with an administrator name. Don’t use something like “admin.” It makes your site an easy prey to hackers. Choose a name unique to you such as “Fairlane B=Willy.”

  • Critical Step: Choose Your Password Wisely:

Choose your password. While you may want to use an easy password, hackers love to crack the code to enter your website’s back room and wreak havoc with your blog. Let WordPress generate a password for you to ensure a secure code.

  • Write down your administrator name and your password in a secure place.
  • Set Up Your Blog’s Nickname:

Enter your admin nickname. This will be your display name and can be changed later if you don’t like it. You can use your name, your company name, or your initials. Enter the admin email.

  • Set Up Your email:

This should be a working email address to which you have access. Be sure to double-check it to prevent errors. Next, choose your site name. Your site name can also be changed later in the administration settings.

  • Create a Descriptive Slogan for Your Blog:

Enter the description of your website. This is your tagline or slogan. For example: HomeBizForRetireees.com: Make Money From Home, Even If You Are Retired!

  • Now is the Time to Click Install:

Once you’ve done that, click “install WordPress.” A page will come up prompting you to review your choices. If they’re correct, click “finish.” If not, hit the back button and correct any errors.

How Long Will It Take to Install?

Once you install WordPress, it will take a few seconds to a few hours depending on your site and system before the site is set up and you can begin customizing it. You can log into your WordPress website upon completion by going to www.yoursite.com/wp-login.php. Enter the administrator username and password you chose earlier.

  • Settings: More Choices to Tweak Your Site:

On the left side, look for a box that says “Settings.” In that box, there will be multiple settings you can tweak including your site name, slogan, your local time, your email address and more.

You Are Done. It is Time to Celebrate!

Announcement: A New Series of Videos Just for You

I will be developing a series of short videos to show you how to install your blog. It is much easier to show you how to do it in “bite sized” bits of information. I discovered in my research that most videos are long and often overlook essential steps the author took for granted their audience would know. Hence, I would spend hours trying to figure out how to do that “missing step.”

Stay tuned to my blog for more information. Do you have any comments? Leave it below. Don’t forget to vote for my blog on YouTube with a “Thumbs Up,” and Facebook with a “like.” .
